A whole house renovation and addition to an age worn home in Lafayette, California. The original structure was a proto-typical post war rancher that had suffered through a number of poor quality remodels and exhibited an advanced stage of benign neglect. After stripping away the dead wood, the floor plan was reconstituted to bookend the central family spaces with bedroom wings, master suite on one side, kids on the other. Room for the master suite and office was created by infilling an existing attached garage space, which in turn was accommodated in a new detached two car garage. The front of the home showcases a relaxing cedar framed porch with hints of Japanese woodworking and joinery. The boxiness of the original interior was replaced by free-flowing, interconnected spaces and volumes that look through a wall of glass doors to the pool terrace in the rear yard. To help reinforce the new spatial verticality, a kids loft was added with peek-a-boo windows overlooking the vaulted spaces of the entry, dining room, and family room. Outback, a pool house and cabana help frame the exterior space and serve to form a relaxing compound for exterior living.
